John Brian Ledingham

John Brian Ledingham (September 20, 1935-August 24, 2021)
Brian, whose parents were Mary and Jack Ledingham, was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. He graduated from Magee Secondary School in 1953 and went on to study Engineering Physics at UBC. While working for BC Research Council (BCRC), he developed a system for protecting underwater wooden pilings from marine borer damage and subsequently developed a fire-retardant mastic that was used on railway trestles all over North America. He left BCRC to found Ocean Coatings.
Brian was a unique, out-of-the-box, creative thinker - an extraordinarily inventive problem solver - and a fine athlete, excelling at skiing, water-skiing and tennis.
At recent gatherings of family and friends, Brian regaled us with tales of his many hilarious escapades which, while not surprising to anyone who knew him, we were hearing for the first time.
Brian will be sadly missed by Carmen Kellman (his life partner for almost forty years), Jo Ledingham (first wife), daughters Shelley and Andrea, grandchildren Maxine, Luke and Leilani, his son Andrew Miller, sister Sylvia Greenwood (Hugh), nieces Lynn van Deursen (Paul) and Kelly Leroux (George), nephew Bruce Greenwood (Susan), Callie Anders, Lisa Kellman and many friends.
Several weeks before he died, Brian talked about working on his tennis stroke. Asked if he could still run, he laughed and admitted, "No, not really." He was considering purchasing a ball machine that would reliably return the ball to him without having to run around the court.
Brian died peacefully at Nanaimo General Hospital on a bright, sunny August afternoon with Carmen by his side - a great day, he might have said, for "hitting a few balls".
